Mona’s is a neighborhood gay bar with a quirky decor known for hosting events to increase money for community groups.
Owned by Jerry Schultz, Mona’s Cocktail Lounge & Lisa’s Backyard has been a popular gathering spot and local watering hole since 1997.
Stop in any diurnal for a great cool beverage, a game of pool, or to attach out on the patio. Great priced drinks and friendly bartenders round out the specials at this pet-friendly drinking spot.
Mona’s is open daily at noon.

Waterworks Pub is Albany’s premier LGBTQ+ Pub and Night club.

Located at the begin of Albany’s male lover village, Waterworks is the oldest gay-oriented LGBTQ+ community lock in Albany where our motto is Unity. Established in 1981, Waterworks is located in a historic multi-level building that enables us to offer something for everyone.

Des Moines Forgotten

With another Identity festival month here, I have dug deep into the history books of the gay lore of Des Moines. In November of 2022, I wrote a column on the Blue Goose and the P&S Lounge, two male lover bars with origins dating help to the late 1960s and early 1970s. 

The P&S Lounge was located at 301 Second Ave. and owned by two lesbians, Peggy and Shirley. P&S eventually sold to Chuck Brooks (brother to Des Moines city councilman Archie Brooks) who went on to open many gay bars including the famous City Disco Park.

The Blue Goose was located at 206 Third St. and was owned by Marlys Watson and her husband, Marty. 

The 1960s and 1970s was a uncontrolled time for “Gay Des Moines.” There were usually five or six gay bars in the heart of downtown around Court Avenue at any given second along with multiple dirty bookstores separating the store fronts.
