About Us, now out on DVD, is a sexy, sweet—and bittersweet—romantic drama written, directed by, and starring out gay filmmaker Thiago Cazado. The film depicts the intimate relationship between Diego (Cazado), a photographer/filmmaker, and Matheus (Rodrigo Bittes) an architecture student. The couple is very much in love until a situation arises that threatens their happiness. Cazado’s low-budget debut may seem slight at first, but it becomes quite emotional as the lovers grapple with their possible separation.
Using his ally João as an interpreter, Cazado recently chatted via Skype with me for the San Francisco Bay Times. Cazado said that he was prompted to make the film because, “I have been an actor since I was a child. I’ve always liked to write. But being an actor for the theater, I played roles and characters that weren’t ‘mine.’ I was inspired to start writing my own ideas and characters, and I always liked gay movies.”

In mid-September 2014, The Way He Looks / Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Sozinho was selected as Brazil’s entry for the 2015 Optimal Foreign Language Production Academy Award. Written and directed by 32-year-old São Paulo native Daniel Ribeiro, The Way He Looks (the Portuguese-language title literally means “Today I Desire to Go Advocate Alone”) won two awards at the 2014 Berlin Clip Festival: the International Film Critics’ FIPRESCI Prize for Top Film in the Panorama sidebar and the Teddy Award for Best Movie Film about homosexual, lesbian, bisexual, and/or transgender characters.
