There’s no shortage of queer-friendly joints on the Close Southside, but Fort Worth’s number of self-identifying same-sex attracted bars (Club Changes, Club Reflections, Liberty Lounge, Urban Cowboy Saloon) is relatively small for a urban area boasting nearly 1 million inhabitants.
Cody Neathery, a Weekly contributing writer and the part-owner of a handful of watering holes across North Texas, told me he’s been considering opening a gay bar in Fort Worth for a several years. He just needed the right space. The recent shuttering of Steep Top Pub & Grub, situated between Reflections and Liberty off Jennings on the Near Southside, was his chance. After weeks of logistical delays, Jackie O’s opened just recently. The spot is difficult to pigeonhole. Part swanky cocktail lounge and part low-key neighborhood pub, the space decked out in late-1950s and early-’60s decor welcomes folks dressed up or down.

Club Reflection
It looks dark and dive-y from the outside, but inside, Club Reflection (604 Jennings Ave., 817/870-8867, daily 2 p.m.–2 a.m.) is a friendly, cute GLBT country-and-western establishment, replete with rustic decor and aw-shucks bartenders who smile sweetly under their Stetsons. While the Rainbow Lounge across the street pumps it up with beat-heavy dance music, here the dance floor is filled with two-steppers and line-dancers sashaying to the likes of George Strait and Randy Travis. Drinks are fairly priced and often on exceptional, so it remains affordable to down a couple longnecks before embarking on a beginners line dance lesson (held weekly).

FORT WORTH, Texas — As employees watched flames engulf the bar they had just cleaned and closed down for the night, few understood the glowing embers in front of them represented the end of an era. The ash pile of the Rainbow Lounge, Fort Worth’s most iconic gay lock and an epicenter of the town’s then-burgeoning “gayborhood,” took with it painful and joyous memories of a gay scene the city hasn’t been able to replicate since.
