Shirley Caesar denies making anti-gay remarks

Shirley Caesar found herself in the same hot moisture that fellow gospel singer Kim Burrell was in this past week when a viral Facebook video seemingly showed Caesar defending Burrell’s infamous anti-gay sermon. However, Caesar recently came forward to clarify her words and deny that she ever said anything homophobic.

As previously reported, Burrell outraged fans across the nation earlier this month when a video surfaced of her telling church members that anyone afflicted with the “homosexual spirit” is “perverted.” She also made reference to Bishop Eddie Long’s reported illness as being relation for homosexual activity.

Since then, many celebs, including Pharrell, Yolanda Adams, and Janelle Monae, have come forward to denounce Burrell’s hateful words. Talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres axed Burrell’s performance of her “Hidden Figures” song “I Notice Victory” with Pharrell on the show. In a sermon preached at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden in Landover, Maryland, on Wednesday, Caesar seemed to subliminally defend Burrell by speaking out against President Barack Obama's conclusion to support the legalization of queer marriage.

"I come here to tell you tonight that all of us own made a whole lot of mistakes," said Caesar, who is a pastor at Mount Calvary Pos of Faith Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, in the sermon posted on YouTube. "If walls could talk, if hotel beds could communicate . If you were going to speak something, you should have said it four years ago when our president made that stuff alright."

GOSPELflava: Pastor Caesar, what a privilege to talk with you.  What can be said about your many years of ministry? Did you ever imagine that life would bring you to this point?

Pastor Caesar: I always knew that the calling of God was on my existence from a child.  I used to lay up in bed at night and visualize myself singing and preaching and having a healing service with my mother at the front of the prayer line.  But if anybody would have ever told me that I would be next in line behind Mahalia Jackson to receive a Grammy for Gospel music and vocalize for Presidents and heads of state, and travel overseas and do films and tv.  I would have never believed it , never never never.  I will add to this, that this is the Lord’s doing, and its just marvelous i
