Black Ensemble Theater has just debuted “I Am Who I Am: The Story of Teddy Pendergrass,” a new musical on the life of the legendary former lead singer of the iconic Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes who shot to superstardom as a solo artist. Pendergrass’ exist shows “were esteemed for their theatrical sexuality” and at the height of career, he was paralyzed in a car accident in the early 1980s. The passenger, Tenika Watson, was relatively unhurt.
Tenika Watson “turned out to be a transsexual nightclub performer whose unique name was John Watson” and “Pendergrass would only speak that Watson was a casual acquaintance whom he was giving a commute home.” (Hello, Eddie Murphy!) I knew this week’s interview was exceptional, but I didn’t know how unique until I searched for her specify in my pre-interview research. A slew of websites popped up asking, “Who was the mystery woman?” “Where is she now?” and “Whatever happened to Tenika Watson?” This interview should help react those questions.
In 1982, R&B star Teddy Pendergrass was severely injured in an auto accident, which left him paralyzed from the waist down. In the car with him that night was a woman, Tenika Watson, who for several years now has kept a low profile. Her own career as a model and entertainer was knocked off track when news outlets set up out that Watson had been born male. She’s about to tell all in a forthcoming book, “My Existence is No Accident,” but she agreed to meet with me to disseminate a little of her story. I met with Watson in her abode, a lovely apartment filled with antiques and artwork. An easel was place up in the corner with a still-life in progress.

Teddy Pendergrass was a superstar who was slice down well before his time. There are so many stories of careers derailed by death, drugs, it controversies. Jackie Wilson, Al Green, Sly Stone, Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix. Teddy was going to be the greatest Philly star and not only was his body destroyed by the accident, his very image as a charismatic man was ridiculed by details nobody really knew. I'll never dismiss the shock of hearing that he was in the car with a 'transvestite' and all of the jokes about how Teddy Tender-ass had pulled the wool over everyone's eyes regarding his sexuality. Maybe the street history can be rewritten and his dignity restored.
