California’s coastline is legendary, and so is its Gay beach culture. From Los Angeles to San Diego, the Golden State is home to some of the optimal gay destinations on the planet. It’s also home to one of the world’s largest Queer populations, so you can expect plenty of eye candy on the beach.
Will Rogers State Beach – Los Angeles
Located just north of Santa Monica, Will Rogers Beach (aka “Ginger Rogers Beach”) is LA’s most popular gay beach. The gay section is around Lifeguard Tower 18 - look for the rainbow flags and speedos.
The beach notice became a famous destination for same-sex attracted men in the 1940s and was soon dubbed "Ginger Rogers Beach" in honor of the silver screen actress (she who danced backwards and in high heels), who was known for her campy performances that drag queens began emulating in the 1930s and 1940s.
In recognition of its historical significance, Los Angeles County painted lifeguard towers 17 and 18 in the colors of the Progress Pride Flag in June 2023 and installed signs displaying the area's cultural importance to the LGBTQ+ community. You will recognise the setting from many an Instagram thirst trap.
The City eventually made Main Beach a public park, also known as the ‘Window to the Sea.’ The gay culture eventually migrated to the 1400 block of South Coast Route, which was home to The Coast Inn, Boom Boom Room and a gay dinner house. This became the hub and heart of gay culture for the next several decades.
It was in 1982, that Laguna Beach made national news by electing the first openly gay mayor in Orange County, Bob Gentry. The city continued to be a haven and friendly place for the local LGBTQ community

Jacob Alexander’s Guide to the Finest SoCal Gay Beaches
This past summer, while I was taking hour to travel and visit friends all across the country, I ended up in San Diego for Pride weekend. While I was there, I saw San Diego’s incredible Pride Parade for the first time ever, had loads of fun partying in the San Diego Zoo delayed at night, was able to see Kesha perform at Balboa Park, and most importantly I was swept up into an intense and passionate romance with a boy which led to me changing my plans and calling SoCal home for a few months. Our tryst ended as heavily and passionately as it began, and I shortly made my way to Key West to start my brand-new adventures here.
Though my period with this boy reaffirmed my belief that every moment can be beautiful, and you should never stop letting your breath be taken away by the world around you. We went on many adventures in the short time we were together, and I’ll never forget the moments that we shared.
